Phoebe Waller-Bridge is already turning out to be the big winner of awards season (but then, by how much we all loved the second series of Fleabag, we’re hardly surprised). Last night, the director-slash-actress triumphed yet again, by taking home best actress in a comedy series and best comedy series at the 2020 Critics' Choice Awards.
And, true to form, she also gave us another amazing speech - but this time, instead of shouting out Obama, like she did at the Golden Globes, she gave a shout-out to another unexpected star… J.Lo - who Phoebe says inspired Andrew Scott’s The Hot Priest character. (Honestly, is there anything J.Lo can’t do? Her powers are unrivalled.)
Accepting her award for best comedy series, Phoebe decided to thank Jennifer (who was also at the ceremony, nominated for her role in Hustlers). ‘This is a bit of a random shout-out,’ she said. ‘But you have no idea how you can accidentally inspire people just by doing your work, and somebody inspired this show in a way that you'll never know, and that's J.Lo!
‘I don't know where she is, but I decided that the Priest's favorite song was Jenny from the Block and it opened the entire character up for me... So, I don't know where she is, but that's really genuine, so thank you, thank you J.Lo.’
When accepting her award for best comedy, the star - wearing a stunning black floor-length gown - also revealed that she’d lost her voice through partying too much after her Golden Globes win. 'This has been an unbelievable week, topping it off has given me a really sexy voice,' she told the audience. We can't say we blame her for partying, tbh.
