The Duke of Cambridge has shared an emotional tribute to his late grandfather, Prince Philip. Posting his thoughts on his official website, he wrote:
'My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family.
'I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!
'My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation. Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.'
This is a longer message following their initial social media post from last week. Reposting the statement Buckingham Palace made on social media, the post read: 'It is with deep sorrow that Her MajestyThe Queen{
William, Philip's grandson, and Kate posted the tribute on their Instagram -@kensingtonroyal - and retweeted the news from the Royal family's official account on their Twitter @kensingtonroyal. @clarencehouse - the acount for Prince Charles, his son, and Camilla Parker-Bowles - have also reshared the tribute and black-and-white image of Philip.
Following the news, the Royal Family Instagram and Twitter accounts also changed their display pictures – which previously showed a smiling picture of the Queen – to the UK's royal coat of arms. Kensington Royal also changed its profile pictures to the couple’s official monogram, and Clarence House has also adopted its crest.
In 2016, actor Matt Smith - who played Philip in Netflix drama The Crown - recalled the moment when he asked William for any advice on playing his grandfather, to which William reportedly replied: 'Just one word - legend. He’s an absolute legend.'
Politicians have also paid their respects. Boris Johnson, the prime minister, wrote: 'We mourn today with Her Majesty the Queen, we offer our condolences to her and all her family and we give thanks as a nation and a kingdom for the extraordinary work of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.' Labour leader of the opposition Keir Starmer also noted Philip's devotion to The Queen, saying: 'Their marriage has been a symbol of strength, stability and hope, even as the world around them changed - most recently during the pandemic. It was a partnership that inspired millions in Britain and beyond.'
