Peter Lindbergh has died aged 74, according to a post on his official Instagram page.
The German photographer is widely considered to have been responsible for the rise of the supermodel, having worked with Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss in the 90s.
Lindberg's most recent work was featured in British Vogue’s Forces For Change issue, which was guest edited by Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. He photographed Salma Hayek, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Jameela Jamil among others for the issue, which highlighted women making a change.
A post to his official Instagram page on Wednesday read:
‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Lindbergh on September 3rd 2019, at the age of 74.
He is survived by his wife Petra, his first wife Astrid, his four sons Benjamin, Jérémy, Simon, Joseph and seven grandchildren.
He leaves a big void.’
Tributes immediately started pouring in for the photographer on social media, and now Meghan Markle has posted on @sussexroyal. 'The Duchess of Sussex had worked with Peter in the past and personally chose him to shoot the 15 women on the cover for the September issue of British Vogue, which she guest edited. There is no other photographer she considered to bring this meaningful project to life.'
‘My heart is broken,’ Charlize Theron wrote on Twitter, with an image of herself modeling for the late photographer.
‘Peter Lindbergh was a genius and an absolute master of his craft. Beyond that, what made him truly one of a kind was his consistent kindness, warmth, and incredible sense of humor. One of the best human beings I have ever met. I will never forget you my friend.’
