Take a look through the list of people attending Prince Philip's memorial and you'll see it's a very exclusive guest list. But, among the royals, was his dear friend Penny Knatchbull. So who is she?
Penny Knatchbull became known as Penny Brabourne through marriage, but her official title is Countess Mountbatten of Burma, and she was formerly known as Lady Romsey and Lady Brabourne. She was Philip's carriage driving partner. The Mail Online states that she was 'a regular visitor at Wood Farm, the cottage on the edge of the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk where the Prince spent much of his time after retiring from public life in August 2017.
The pair were firm friends for decades and shared a love for the exhilarating equestrian sport of carriage-driving.'
Penny, 68, is married to the Earl of Mountbatten, Norton Knatchbull, grandson of the late Prince Philip's uncle, the 1st Earl Mountbatten. Anyone who watched season 4 of The Crown will know that he was killed by the IRA in 1979, with his death greatly affecting the whole family.
Penny, who Philip is said to have called 'and also' as an affectionate signifier of the fact that he would insist on her attendance at any function - 'invite x, y and also, Penny,' for example - became close to the Queen and Prince Philip when her daughter, Leonora, died tragically at the age of five, of liver cancer.
Prior to his death, Philip was reported to have invited her regularly to join him on carriage rides. This might seem a strange detail to the casual reader - carriage riding does, after all, seem like something out of a fairytale or history book - but you know how the other half live: carriage riding is very much a rural and royal tradition and, like polo, considered a jolly social affair for those involved.
'Penny and the Duke of Edinburgh shared decades of affection,' a source tells Grazia. 'Her presence at the funeral among only thirty attendees is exactly what the late Duke would have wanted, and the entire family will be pleased to have her among them on the sombre occasion. Naturally, the situation will mean that they must all keep their distance from each other, but coming together in grief will be hugely beneficial and of great comfort to all.
