Paul Mescal Reveals What He Thinks Will Happen To Normal People’s Connell And Marianne

Our big question after watching Normal People (apart from: what's Paul Mescal's Instagram) was wondering what the hell will happen to Marianne and Connell? (Spoiler alert if you haven't seen the series yet...) Would they ever get back together after Connell went to study literature in New York?

Now, in a podcast for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Paul has revealed his post-finale predictions for Sally Rooney's complicated couple. 'My opinion kind of changes with the breeze in the sense that I think he goes to New York,' he said. 'I think Connell is not somebody who's particularly well-equipped to exist in New York, but I think that him being so drastically out of his comfort zone will allow him to really focus on his identity as a writer. I think he will, at some point, start to thrive in New York.'

OK, so, the big question, how does he think Connell and Marianne would fare? 'Of course there's the question of where do him and Marianne fit in? And this is the tricky one. I don't know,' he added. But he does have hope for the pair, sort of. 'I think there's probably room for another major relationship in his life, potentially not with her, and likewise with her.'

He continued: 'I think that they will cause a lot of hurt to their potential partners before they end up being back together, because fundamentally I believe that they will... see what's in front of them, and commit, and that's what I like. I don't think it would be an easy five to 10 years.'

Speaking to Grazia recently, Love Island host Laura Whitmore revealed that she thought the couple would be brilliant in the villa due to their turbulent nature. ‘They would be great in the Love Island villa,’ she says. ‘I think it'd be brilliant because they're exactly what you want because they're on a journey. Like Amber and Kem the year they did it and Siannise and Luke [from this year], they had a journey - [Siannise] wasn’t even who [Luke] was coupled up with at the start and then they ended up together - and I feel Marianne and Connell are like that, like they’re together, they broke up. Can you imagine... they’d be definitely dating other people.

'If he went to Casa Amor, he’d definitely come back with someone else and then she's heartbroken again all over again,' she adds. 'And then they’d probably win the whole thing.'
