Paul Mescal may not have won the Best Actor award at the Oscars for his performance in Aftersun (losing out to Brendan Fraser for The Whale) - but he was our winner for most charming nominee, bringing his mum Dearbhla as his plus one.
Wearing a 70s style white tux by Gucci, complete with red rose in his lapel, Paul was giving dream prom-date vibes. With his number one fan on his arm the pair stopped to talking Variety on the red carpet (which was actually 'Champagne coloured' this year. Dearbhla said: 'This is just the most incredible, incredible moment - and it's real, it's actually not fantasy, it's actually real.'
When asked what she thought hon Paul first said he wanted to be an actor she replied, 'I trusted him, he just knew wha the wanted to do and let's just go with it.'
In January, Paul's sister - singer-songwriter Nell Mescal - shared that their mother Dearbhla was undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, tweeting: 'My mum got a haircut today in prep for her chemotherapy and then Paul got nominated for an Oscar. Life is so crazy'
In the run up to the Academy Awards, Paul admitted he never dreamed that he would be nominated for his role in Aftersun - in which he plays a single dad on holiday with his daughter - but Paul's mum always had faith.
'She’s had that date booked in her diary for years. She had lots of confidence, probably more confidence than I did, that this was ever going to happen,' Paul previously told ABC
Other stars paid tribute to their mums at last night's Oscars. Michelle Yeoh, who won Best Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once (which won Best Picture) said her 84-year-old mother was at home watching the ceremony from Malaysia. She thanked her and 'all the mums in the world because they are really the superheroes and without them none of us would be here tonight.'
