If there's one person we were rooting to win at the Emmys last night, it was Paul Mescal. We were delighted when it was revealed in July that the Irish actor had been nominated for his role as the very serious Connell in Normal People. (Even if we did also think that his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones had been robbed when she didn't get a nomination.)
But sadly, despite getting our vote, Paul lost out on the lead actor award to Mark Ruffalo, with Jeremy Irons, Hugh Jackman and Jeremy Pope also being nominated in the same category.
Paul still dressed for the virtual ceremony from home, wearing a Louis Vuitton suit - but he changed into a more casual t-shirt when his family called to catch up with him after the show. Sharing a photo of a Facetime call, Paul's sister younger Nell captioned the snap: 'We still love you.' And in typical parent style, his mum was giving him the L-sign.
Mark landed the award on the night, thanks to his role in I Know This Much Is True, where he plays twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. Mark also accepted his award by video call from his home ,while joined by his wife Sunny Coginey. 'If you have privilege, you have to fight for those who are less fortunate,' he said in this acceptance speech, urging fans to vote for 'love and compassion and kindness' in the upcoming US election. 'One thing I’ve learned about my family is we are stronger together. We have a strong important moment ahead of us, vote for love and compassion and kindness.’
