Everyone thinks they know Paris Hilton, after all, she’s been in the public consciousness since the early 2000’s – we pretty much grew up with her. She is such a familiar figure that ask any two people on the street and they will probably relay the same uniform narrative of her life; sex-tape, reality show, jail-time.

In an interview with Marie-Claire this weekend, Hilton took the opportunity to correct some misconceptions of her that have persistently beset her life and career – admittedly, she might have cultivated some of them herself, but that was back when she was an impressionable teen, under the instruction of countless producers and a PR crew. It’s interesting to see what she thinks of it all now.

On her baby voice:

'I was really kind of shy in the beginning,' she says. 'The producers [of the Simple Life] just said, 'Act spoiled, a kind of blonde airhead… Now when I hear the baby voice, I want to punch myself.'

On being the 'dumb blonde'

[before doing a particularly arduous nightclub appearance recently] 'I just said to myself, Paris, go into the character. Then I just, like, light up. I'm sweet. I make everyone feel good, and then I end up feeling good.'

On being a business woman:

'I want people to know that I'm grown-up,' she told Marie-Claire. 'I'm a responsible businesswoman. I work very hard. I'm down-to-earth.'

On the impact of those sex tapes

'My whole life I really looked up to Princess Diana, all these elegant, amazing women, and I feel like [Salomon - her then boyfriend, who later distributed the leaked tape himself, through an adult film company] just took that all away from me.'

On feminism

'I just feel it's about women's empowerment and girl power, and I'm very into that.'

On Donald Trump's 'grab them by the pussy' line

‘I’ve heard guys say the craziest things ever, because I'm always around guys, and I listen to them speak,
