At the 89th Academy Awards, the most in-demand accessory of the night wasn't a statement shoe, an 'it' bag or a prohibitively expensive piece of jewellery. Instead, you might have spotted Hollywood's best and brightest teaming their red carpet finery with a surprising adornment: a simple blue ribbon.
The blue pins, worn by the likes of Best Actress nominee Ruth Negga, supermodel Karlie Kloss and Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda, are a sign of the wearer's solidarity with the American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU.
As part of the civil rights organisation's latest initiative, which launched earlier this week, the ACLU has sent the ribbons to Oscars nominees, presenters and guests, inviting them to 'Stand With ACLU.'
'This symbol of solidarity with the ACLU acknowledges the commitment of those on the front lines – in the courts, legislatures and in the streets – who are working to ensure that our precious freedoms and values are preserved,' the organisation explained in a statement.
Ruth Negga was the first star seen sporting the ribbon, pairing it with her custom Valentino gown. Her choice of accessory feels especially poignant given the nature of the role that earned her a first Oscar nomination: Loving tells the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, the couple who overturned America's miscegenation laws to make inter-racial marriage legal in all US states. The film tells of how the pair's case was taken to the Supreme Court by an ACLU-sponsored lawyer.
The ACLU's membership has doubled since President Trump was elected in November last year, and has since received around $80 million in donations.
