The countdown for the main event of awards season is on: the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards, or Oscars, have been revealed.
After a record-breaking Golden Globes (the film took seven trophies, winning in every category in which it was nominated) and sweeping up 11 BAFTA nominations, it's hardly surprising that La La Land is leading the Oscar race with a massive 14 nominations, tying with All About Eve and Titanic for the most nods from the Academy.
However, it's unlikely that Damien Chazelle's musical will repeat its Globes clean sweep: the Academy has different rules for nomination categories, meaning La La Land will go up against dramas like Moonlight and Manchester By The Sea in the prestigious Best Picture category.
Breaking with tradition, the Academy chose not to unveil its nominations at an early morning press briefing, attended by journalists and studio employees. Instead, the news was broadcast online via a live stream, hosted by past Oscar winners like Brie Larson, Jennifer Hudson, Gabourey Sidibe and Dustin Lance Black.
The winners will be revealed at the ceremony held on February 26th.
