This week's bombshell announcement from The Duke and Duchess of Sussex - Harry and Meghan - that they were taking a step back from royal duties has caused major shock across the globe. But one member of the A List was, apparently, not surprised: apparently Oprah Winfrey had a head's up.
According to American news site Page Six, the TV host, actress and general goddess spoke to Harry and Meghan ahead of the announcement. 'Oprah was the first person to talk to Harry and Meghan about breaking free and doing their own thing, building on their own brand', a source explains. 'She made them realise it was really possible.'
Oprah, however, quickly poured cold water over the suggestion. 'Meghan and Harry do not need my help figuring out what’s best for them,' she said in a statement. 'I care about them both and support whatever decisions they make for their family.'
Oprah goes way back with the couple, and attended their wedding in 2018. She and Harry are also collaborating professionally, on a documentary about global issues for Apple Plus
'I asked him the question, "What do you think are the most important issues facing the world right now?" and he said there are two,' she explained in an interview with CBS. 'He said climate change and mental wellness, mental fitness and mental health. As you know, he's spoken about his own issues and what he went through after his mother died and how being able to talk about it has benefited him.'
'He said at the end of the conversation, "If there's anything I can do to help..."'
Oprah's BFF Gayle King is also well-placed to host a sit-down interview with Harry and Meghan, if they feel the need to set the record straight once their new regime begins. After all, Gaye is a friend of Meghan's and attended her baby shower in New York.
While Oprah has insisted that she did not help them in their plans, she is certainly one of their most famous friends. It's a crowded field, though: they are close with George and Amal Clooney and Barack and Michelle Obama.
That's a phonebook we want to get our hands on.
