Olivia Colman may be an Oscar-winning national treasure, but she's just like us really. Last night she won a Golden Globe for playing Elizabeth II in The Crown, but admitted that she was so sure she wasn't going to win that she'd got a bit tipsy beforehand.
'I had money on this not happening,' Olivia told the crowd of stars after taking to the stage. 'For the last year I feel I've been living someone else's life, and now I feel I've won someone else's award.' She thanked Netflix and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, before running out of things to say. 'I genuinely got a little bit boozy because I thought this wasn’t going to happen. So, thank you. 'Completely stumped.'
She should perhaps have been a little less surprised. Season 3 of The Crown has been critically acclaimed, and Claire Foy - who played the Queen in the first two series of the Netflix programme - has previously won the award in the same category.
Once the surprise wore off, Olivia said that the party was set to continue well into the night. Speaking in the winners' room after her win, Olivia said that while she had initially expected her evening to end with a 'cup of tea' back in her hotel, she now expected the night to be 'getting more boozy.' Perhaps we can expect a repeat of last year's Emmys, where Fleabag writer and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge was photographed clutching her awards, a cocktail and a cigarette in the early hours of the morning.
Olivia accepted her prize while wearing a ring promoting ERA 50:50, a campaign advocating equal gender representation on British stage and screen.
She also gave a shout-out to Fleabag - in which she plays the godmother of the title character - exclaiming 'Fleabag, yay!' to the crowd. Other British winners included Succession actor Brian Cox, Rocketman's Taron Egerton and director Sam Mendes.
