Only Obama Can Talk About His Dad Dancing Techniques On TV and Still Be Cool

Former president (sobs it still hurts) Barack Obama, will be the first guest on David Letterman’s new Netflix show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, and a teaser clip released ahead of the premiere proves that Obama really is the ex we’ll never be over. In just one minute, Obama proves to the world all over again (as if we needed reminding) that he is just that cool.

First of all, he’s talking about dancing on stage with Prince. So that’s already the coolest start to any anecdote ever.

He recalls his daughter Sasha pulling him up to dance with Prince just a few months before the musician’s death in 2016, admitting he was surprised because normally his daughter mocks his dancing.

‘I have dad moves,’ Obama says, casually making it sound like the most desirable quality any person could ever have, and immediately leaving the rest of the world wanting “dad moves”. (A perfectly legitimate aspiration, but let’s be real you’re never going to pull it off like Obama, so don’t even try).

Obama then goes on to explain the dad dancing technique to adopt if you don’t wish to embarrass your children: ‘And I think the key is, what we call, staying in the pocket. You’ve got to stay in the pocket.’

Reign it in, he advises, don’t be one of those out-of-the-pocket dads: ‘They’re trying stuff they can’t really pull off, and you know they start doing karate kicks and all kinds of stuff.’

Although, I’m pretty sure Obama could pull off anything, it’s sound advice. No karate kicks on the dance floor.

If you want/need more than this 60-second dose of Obama, catch the full interview in the first episode of My Next Guest Needs No IntroductionMy Next Guest Needs No Introduction*, 12 January on Netflix.*
