The trailer for Nicole Kidman’s turn as Grace Kelly is here and, we're going out on a tentative limb to say, it looks actually alright. Nicole plays Grace after her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco (played by Tim Roth) as he tries to make her a proper princess. (FYI, did you know that he banned the screening of all of her films in Monaco after the wedding? Well he did. And when she was offered further roles in Alfred Hitchcock’s films, Rainier banned the Vertigo actress from filming them. Controlling, much?)
The trailer shows Grace torn between her two lives: her career as an actress and her marital duties of being a princess and doting mother. And she also seems to be caught up in some diplomatic squabbles, as the principality would have been ceded to France if Rainier and Grace couldn’t produce an heir. To think all of this happened in the 1950’s is positively weird. It's the type of thing you'd expect from Game of Thrones.
After the mess that was the Diana biopic, we’re yet to see whether this other Antipodean-does-European-princess film will fare better. However, the trailer does seem a lot better. At the very least, the outfits are going to be stunning and there is a lot of genuine friction to be turned into drama here. That said, the last thing we heard of this film was when the Weinstein brothers both wanted a new final cut of the film and pushed its release from late 2013 to Spring 2014. Hopefully the film will be a lot more entertaining than all the behind-the-scenes wranglings.
