A-levels – oh how we remember thee. Hours spent revising textbook upon textbook. Coffee spills down our outfits we’ve spent three days wearing. And oh yeah, the days of procrastination - pouring over the latest fashion magazine (Grazia, obvs). A blissful distraction from looming exams.
Well now sixth-form students will soon be able to classify this time as revision - studying influential designers from Christian Dior to Vivienne Westwood as part of a brand new Fashion A-level.
Um, where do we sign up?!
The new course - officially named 'Design and Technology: Fashion and Textiles A-level’ – is essentially a crash course in style from past to present.
Lessons in Punk to Pop Art? Learning about the influence of social media today? It’s all there. Alongside teaching you how to create your own patterns and use new design technology as well. Think of this as a Textile course for Generation Y meets Project Runway.
The new A-level, which is categorised under Design and Technology, will be available to schools to teach from September 2017.
“The UK’s thriving fashion industry makes a huge contribution to the economy” Ben Galvin, AQA Qualifications Developer says. “It employs hundreds of thousands of people and is one of our most sought-after exports.”
“It’s important that we support the growth of this industry by developing young people with a solid understanding of the commercial, creative and technical sides of the trade,” Ben adds.
We’d like to think team Grazia would get an A*!
