Netflix UK has announced a change to their membership pricing for 2021, so your Netflix and chill will be more expensive this year. The platform revealed a number of changes to each membership plan available including the increase of its standard monthly package from £8.99 to £9.99, this package allows HD streaming on two devices at the same time.

Also, the premium package has increased from £11.99 to £13.99, this package allows streaming on up to four screens at the same time in 4K. However, the basic plan which allows members to stream at one device at a time in Standard Definition stays the same price at £5.99.

According to BBC News, a statement was released by the streaming giant where they explained the reasoning behind the price increase, 'This year we’re spending over $1bn (£736m) in the UK on new, locally made films, series and documentaries, helping to create thousands of jobs and showcasing British storytelling at its best. Our price change reflects the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films, as well as improvements to our product.'

The platform has brought us some of our faves including The Crown, Sex Education and new hit show Bridgerton, which set a new record for the platform as it is projected to have been streamed in 63 million households after four weeks on the service.

The demand for Netflix in the past year has grown due to people staying at home during local and national lockdowns. During the first UK lockdown in March last year, the amount of content watched by members on the platform increase by a third, in comparison to 2019.

Any members who do want to pay the new monthly amount can change to a different plan at any time, or alternatively cancel their subscription for free.
