We Need To Talk About How We Talk About L’Wren Scott’s Death

Because how many times did you see the designer firstly referred to as 'Mick Jagger's girlfriend'?

The late L’Wren Scott started off her career in fashion as a model. She then became a celebrated stylist before becoming a critically-acclaimed designer. Admired across the fashion industry, she battled personal issues and tragically took her own life on 17 March.

Despite a career spanning 49 years, so many of the news reports about her death yesterday seemed to put her 13-year relationship with Mick Jagger at the forefront of their breaking news. Evidence:

It’s perhaps ironic, then, that being known as someone’s girlfriend was something L’Wren wasn’t happy about in life. ‘I’m a fashion designer. I don’t want to be defined as someone’s girlfriend,’ she told The Times last year. ‘You always wonder if people will pay attention to the hard work that goes into what you do.’

Granted, L’Wren's death perhaps wouldn't have made the front pages of every British newspaper without the Mick Jagger connection – and perhaps pointing out that she killed herself while she was in millions of pounds of debt, and while dating a man worth $305m (£183m), might have some significance. But... seriously? Wouldn’t it be better to remember the amazing career she built up as a model and then by dressing some of the world’s best-loved women, rather than concentrating on the fact that Mick Jagger's just cancelled his Rolling Stones concerts?

Stay classy, media types.
