Forgive me for thinking that Natalie Imbruglia singing ‘I thought I saw a man brought to life, He was warm, he came around like he was dignified, He showed me what it was to cry’, was real. Was real emotion. Was real experience. Was her story. Because it wasn’t. It’s been 21 years since she released Torn and I’ve only just realised that it’s a cover. I’m actually not the only one as Twitter woke up to this cruel realisation, too.

Originally Torn was written in 1993 by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven and Phil Thornalley and recorded by the Danish band Ednaswap led by singer Lis Sørensen. Unsurprisingly, this early warped version didn’t have quite the same international impact as the ex-Neighbours actress’ rendition. Imbruglia earned number one’s in numerous countries including the UK and on the US Billboard charts with her release while Ednaswap sank out of sight.

Though one Twitter user, @VilinskiKonjic, blew a lot of minds last summer when they bought this important pop culture fact to the mainstream consciousness, it bubbled to the top of the social platform again yesterday. Users were noticeably upset. See for yourself below…

Remind yourself of Natalia Imbruglia's version of this iconic '90s hit:
