Remember that whole thing of asking celebrities out on YouTube? It’s back, and Miley Cyrus isn't onboard.

A few days ago an enterprising young chap from Arizona named Matt Peterson tried his luck at asking Miley Cyrus to prom via the oh-so-romantic medium of YouTube – only to get turned down.

It’s not totally out of the blue – the two actually have something of a history. Back in 2009 when Miley was still recognisable as Hannah Montana, Matt was picked to meet the star during a radio interview. He cried. Then, six months later during a performance in Arizona, Miley picked Matt out of the crowd saying, ‘I recognise you!’ Again, he cried.

Matt recaps all of this in the (actually rather adorable) video which then sees him strip off, covering his modesty with (what else) a giant foam finger, before asking Miley to prom and promising her, ‘The best night of your life.’

Sadly Miley is scheduled to be performing in Amsterdam the day before Matt’s prom and has tweeted him to say she won’t be able to make it. She did extend a counter offer though, ‘Why don’t you come to my AZ show & hang w me? Don’t forget a corsage!’

Will this turn out to be Notting Hill for the internet generation? Here’s hoping.
