Mariah Carey recently got a lot of flack for the title of her new album; Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse, but she really is deserving of all the arrogance in the world, because she has one of the best vocal ranges of any singer ever. In this nifty interactive chart, devised by Concert Hotels, they’ve aggregated the highest and lowest notes sung by ‘today’s top artists with the greatest of all time’. The results, in some cases, are baffling. And if you don’t believe them, the makers of the chart have also put a mini piano at the bottom, marking out all of the notes and if you hover over the far reaches of each singer’s entry, you can see which song of theirs contains their highest and lowest notes. Basically, thank the heavens it’s a rough weekend out there, weather wise, because you could easily spend half a day fiddling about on this.
The Vocal Ranges of the Greatest Singers. From Mariah Carey's ear-piercing whistle to Barry White's deep bassy growl, compare the vocal ranges of today's top artists with the greatest of all time. (via ConcertHotels.com).
Well, if you've got better things to do, here are our initial findings:
Miley Cyrus has got tremendous range
We learned this when we saw her perform at The O2 earlier this month, however for all of her showboating some people aren’t quite convinced of her talents. Well, let it be said, her vocal range is better than godmother Dolly Parton, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Adele and Alicia Keys. She’s also loads better at singing across the octaves than Taylor Swift, who is really near the bottom of the chart. Who knew?!
Axl Rose is the best singer ever
Befitting his ego – he cancels gigs at the last minute with no warning, he storms off stage if he’s grumpy and once he sacked his entire band – the Guns ‘N Roses singer has got a range so wide it basically could parade all across the piano keys.
Eminem counts as a singer
According to this chart, he’s a singer, but Madonna isn’t. Oops. He’s also got a great range, featuring about a third of the way up the chart, above two-time collaborator Rihanna and Beyoncé. Which, yes, means Rihanna’s got a better range than Bey.
**Barry White didn’t have the deepest voice **
That accolade is reserved for Axl Rose. Barry – or the Walrus of Love, as he used to be known – comes second, with David Bowie just behind him. Christina Aguilera has a deeper voice than Rod Stewart, so does Lana Del Rey. Christina, though, has reached the second highest note in The Christmas Song. However, this still trails a whopping four notes behind Mariah Carey.
Music really can be the realm of the geeks
We’ve literally spent an hour nerding out about this chart. It’s still not our favourite nerdy music thing on the internet, though. That prize goes to the Tonematrix. Warning: you will spend three days in a Tonematrix hole and eventually convince yourself you’re Jamie xx.
By the way, we’ll add that a great vocal range doesn’t necessarily make for a great singer (and we do think Grimes for all of her high-pitched singing was sadly missing from this chart, and, just out of interest, where on earth is Madonna?) but there’s no denying that Mariah and Axl are definitely some of the most gifted singers ever, right?
