At last year’s Emmys, you’ll remember that Michelle Williams gave an incredible speech about equal pay. Now, at the Golden Globes, the actress again took the opportunity to make her speech political, defending a ‘woman’s right to choose’. Accepting an award for her role in Fosse/Verdon, she said that she is ‘grateful to have lived in a moment in our society where choice exists’ because for women and girls sometimes things ‘can happen to our bodies that are not our choice’.
The actor, who is currently pregnant with director Thomas Kail{
‘Now I know my choices might look different than yours, but thank God or whoever you pray to that we live in a country founded on the principles that I am free to live by my faith and you are free to live by yours.’
The actress - who also has a 14-year-old daughter from her relationship with Heath Ledger - said that she wished all women from the age of ‘18 to 118’ will go out to vote in their ‘own self-interest’. ‘It’s what men have been doing for years,’ she added. ‘It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them. But don’t forget we are the largest voting body in this country.’
The speech received a positive reaction, with Michelle’s friend, Busy Phillipps - who had an abortion at the age of 15 - watching tearfully from the audience. In a tweet, Reese Witherspoon also thanked her ‘for being a champion of women’.
Michelle beat Helen Mirren, Joey King, Kaitlyn Dever and Merritt Wever to take the trophy for playing Gwen Verdon, the dancer whose relationship with choreographer and director Bob Fosse was the centre of FX show Fosse/Verdon. Her partner, Kail, directed the series.
