If you’re wondering what you’re going to watch next in isolation, then luckily Michaela Coel has you sorted. The star of critically lauded comedy Chewing Gum is back with new series, I May Destroy You, which follows author Arabella - played by Michaela - as her life irrevocably changes after she is sexually assaulted in a nightclub. Speaking toMetro, Michaela said the show - which she wrote and executive produced - was partly inspired after her drink was spiked by a stranger in a club. The series starts tonight - and it's already received glowing reviews.
Who is Michaela Coel?
Michaela Coel is a 32-year-old British actress and writer who grew up in Hackney to Ghanaian parents. As well as being an actress, Michaela is a screenwriter, singer, songwriter, poet and playwright. As she performed at poetry open mics in London, she was encouraged by director Ché Walker to apply to Guildhall Drama School. At Guildhall, her senior project was a one-woman show called Chewing Gum Dreams, loosely based on her teenage self, which was of course then picked up to become the hugely successful Chewing Gum series.
What else has Michaela Coel starred in?
The actress has already had a glittering career, starring in Top Boy and Been So Long, starred alongside John Goodman in Black Earth Rising and appeared in Black Mirror (twice).
In 2016, she won the BAFTA for Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme and Breakthrough Talent for Chewing Gum, which she created, wrote and acted in as the lead role.
She also popped up for a cameo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Blink and you'll miss her, but it's the franchise every actor in the universe wants to be a part of.
