Michael Sam, the University of Missouri student, who came out as gay in February, has been drafted into the National Football League of America.

24-year-old Sam was filmed as he watched the draft live on TV with his friends, family and boyfriend in San Diego. When he received the call to say he’d made the St. Louis Rams, Michael Sam broke down in tears before turning to kiss his boyfriend. It's quite a moment.

Sam came out publicly in an interview with the New York Times in February, saying he had a feeling that rumours about his sexuality were circulating anyway: ‘I just want to make sure I could tell my story the way I want to tell it. I just want to own my truth.’

Have a look at the historic moment in the video below. We must warn you though – you will need the tissues handy!
