Ever since it was confirmed that The Devil Wears Prada co-stars Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt were working together again on Mary Poppins Returns, a sequel to the original 1964 film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, we've been on tenterhooks waiting for their blessed reunion.

The new film, which premiered yesterday, is set in Depression-era London 20 years after the classic tale ends, following the now grown up Jane and Michael Banks, who are revisited by Mary Poppins after a personal loss.

Meryl takes the role of Mary Poppins’ cousin Topsy Turvey, who features in the original P.L. Travers books but was not in the previous film.

The Disney project is not the first time that Meryl has had to sing for a role; fans will remember her award-winning musical turn in Mamma Mia, and she also sang in Into The Woods, for which she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (who also worked on Hairspray) wrote the songs, with David Magee writing the script. Rob Marshall, who worked with Meryl in Into The Woods, directed the film.

Speaking of their project, Rob told Variety, ‘I am truly humbled and honoured to be asked by Disney to bring PL Travers' further adventures to the screen.

‘The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation.’

And bring that they did, with Emily and Meryl's reunion particularly warming hearts. Calling Meryl's cameo 'colossal', reviews are looking good for the re-make. 'There are some lovely early moments,' writes Peter Bradshaw for The Guardian, 'especially the bath time set piece that becomes an underwater adventure, and the music hall number in which Blunt breaks out some serious singing and hoofing.'

In fact, you only have to see the adorable pictures of them on the red carpet together to see how well they get on off and on-screen. Not only were we treated to Meryl and Emily's reunion on the red carpet, but also a Mamma Mia! one too, as Colin Firth joined his fellow cast for the UK premiere last night. He was joined by his wife ‎Livia Giuggioli and looked absolutely dapper. Although, Emily and Meryl really did steal the spotlight with their fashion choices, Emily's dress alone has us dreaming of wearing blue the entire festive season.

But don't take our word for it, take a look through for yourself to see just how adorable the Mary Poppins Returns cast really are...
