Unless you've been living under a rock, forgot to pay your phone/internet bill or purposely haven’t picked up the papers in a while, you will have been bombarded with reports of the US presidential election. Recently, this will have mostly featured Bernie Sanders’ refusal to give up as Clinton technically clinches the Democratic nomination and Trump’s latest insulting comments.
While it’s easy to get bogged down in these mundane technicalities or the depressing reality of a possible Trump presidency, Meryl Streep has come to the rescue, adding a touch of humour to this sorry state of affairs. The actress surprised audience members at the annual Shakespeare in the Park Public Theatre Gala in New York on Monday by transforming into the Republican nominee.
Famed for her transformations in an array of film roles, including into England’s own Maggie Thatcher, Streep put her skills to use as she donned fake tan, a padded suit, Trump's signature red tie and even mimicked the politician’s distinctive accent. Meryl then went on to join actress Christine Baranski – channelling Hilary Clinton – in a rendition of “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” form Kiss Me, Kate the musical.
According to The Telegraph, the artistic director of Public Theatre, Oskar Eustis claims this performance was Meryl’s idea from the start as 'she was absolutely sure she could do it.' And she absolutely nailed it.
