While many thought that Meryl Streep’s role in The Devil Wears Prada was inspired by a certain bob-haired, sunglasses aficionado Vogue staffer, you’d be sorely mistaken.

Meryl Streep’s iconic performance as icy boss Miranda Priestly in the 2006 rom-com – which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year - was actually inspired by a well-known male actor.

‘The voice I got from Clint Eastwood,' Streep revealed to Variety. ‘He never, ever, ever raises his voice and everyone has to lean in to listen, and he is automatically the most powerful person in the room.’

Whereas her uber-chic appearance as the Runway magazine editor was influenced by two very different women – 85-year-old supermodel Carmen Dell’Orefice and French lawyer Christine Lagarde.

'I wanted a cross between her [Carmen] and the unassailable elegance and authority of Christine Lagarde,' Streep added.

But even more enlightening is the fact that Meryl, who earned her 14th Oscar nomination for her peformance, may not have played the steely stylista...If it wasn’t for her decision to asked for an increase in pay.

‘The offer was to my mind slightly, if not insulting, not perhaps reflective of my actual value to the project,' Meryl says. ‘There was my ‘goodbye moment,’ and then they doubled the offer. I was 55, and I had just learned, at a very late date, how to deal on my own behalf.’ So there you go. If there's one person to channel at your next pay review...
