When Melania Trump told potential voters in Philidelphia that one of her chief aims as First Lady was going to be to end cyberbullying, the internet raised a collective eyebrow. After all, her husband President Donald Trump is the undisputed king of intensely personal Twitter trolling.
Now her position on the matter seems to have been cleared up, as she has come out in defence of her husband's latest round of cyberbullying, this time targetting US television host Mika Brzezinski.
The spat appears to have begun after Trump was unhappy with how Mika and her co-host Joe Scarborough had recently spoken about him on their TV news talk show, Morning Joe.
Launching into one of his now-famous tirades on Twitter, Trump accused Mika of 'bleeding badly from a face-lift' when he saw her at New Year's Eve, when she had spent time at his members-only club, Mar-a-Lago. He also pours scorn on her IQ ('crazy, low IQ Mika').
So far, so predictable.
But it is Melania's reaction to the incident which is the most surprising. As someone who has largely shied away from the public eye, and who has been vocal about putting a stop to online bullying about people's 'looks or intelligence' - two things that her husband had attacked in Mika.
'As the First Lady has stated publicly in the past, when her husband gets attacked, he will punch back 10 times harder,' said Stephanie Grisham, Melania Trump’s communications director, in a statement to CNN.
Personally, our favourite response is that of Hollywood star Patricia Arquette, who replied to his Tweet saying: 'Donald you are grounded until further notice.'
