Can you imagine the original Bake Off (the one with Mary Berry, of course) without Mel and Sue? Four years after the beguiling pair left the iconic show, Sue has revealed that they both nearly resigned on the first day of filming.

Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, who fronted the popular BBC programme for seven series, feared that producers were making a crueller show than what they had signed up for.

'We resigned, basically,' Sue told the Radio Times. 'Because it was not a kind show. They were pointing cameras in the bakers' faces and making them cry and saying, 'tell us about your dead gran. So we had very stiff words about how we wanted to proceed. I think we can say that, now we're out of it, can't we?'

'We're quite cheesy and home spun and we just want to have a laugh,' continued Sue. 'Who wants to see people crying? I don't. Especially if you work in television and you know the mechanisms that have been used to make them cry.'

There was outrage when GBBO a was bought from the BBC by Channel 4, with a hefty 25 million a year deal. Mel and Sue, along with Mary Berry, decided to leave the show on these grounds. 'We've had the most amazing time on Bake Off and have loved seeing it rise and rise like a pair of yeasted Latvian baps. We’re not going with the dough.'

Mel and Sue quit the show after hearing the news on a television programme. Sue added that the decision was painful. 'There's no antagonism there. I just think,' if you're going to let us find out that way, then we are not really a team, are we? While Mary Berry quit the show, her co-judge Paul Hollywood migrated to Channel 4, starting up a new partnership with Prue Leith. Sandy Toksvig and Noel Fielding were a curveball pairing as new hosts but their strange charm seemed to work well. Sandy however announced in January that she was sadly stepping down, but last week comedian Matt Lucas was revealed as the new replacement.
