As the Mail on Sunday legal battle continues, Meghan' Markle's father Thomas Markle could be called to give evidence at the high court against Meghan. The Duchess of Sussex is suing the newspaper - which filed its defence yesterday - for breach of copyright, invasion of privacy and misuse of personal data after it published excerpts from a personal letter addressed to her estranged father. (Yesterday, Meghan was also photographed for the first time since stepping down from senior royal duties, as she helped a women’s shelter in Canada.)
The Mail on Sunday rejects each claim and will argue it was justified in printing extracts because there is a ‘huge and legitimate’ public interest in the ‘personal relationships’ of members of the royal family. High Court documents, seen by the BBC, have also revealed the newspaper will rely on evidence from Mr Markle, including that he ‘had a weighty right to tell his version of what had happened between himself and his daughter including the contents of the letter’. The documents also include text messages sent by Mr Markle to his daughter. However, no date has yet been set for the case.
Meghan has also made her first public appearance - helping a women’s shelter in Vancouver. The shelter provides counselling, hot meals, and basic needs for women and children in need, and staff members said they had no idea that the Duchess was visiting before she arrived. The shelter posted a sweet photograph on its Facebook page of Meghan at the centre of a group of eight women, with the caption 'Look who we had tea with today! The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, visited us today to discuss issues affecting women in the community.'
Facing the snowy Canadian climes, Meghan wore black jeans tucked into brown quilted Le Chameau boots, a cable knit jumper from The Row (similar here), a black tote bag by Cuyana and a Barbour coat with faux fur hood (similar here).
