Meeting your boyfriend’s family is a nerve-wracking prospect at the best of times, and surely even more so when your new S.O’s grandmother is Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Head of the Commonwealth.
If new reports are to be believed, however, Meghan Markle is set to take another major step in her relationship with Prince Harry by being introduced to the Queen on Mother’s Day later this month.
‘Meghan is headed to meet the Queen on Mother’s Day,’ a source told the Daily Star. ‘She’s already been given the green light from Prince Charles, the next step is the Prince’s grandmother.’
The Suits star and activist is thought to have already met with Harry’s brother William, his wife Kate and their youngest child, Charlotte, earlier this year (Prince George was otherwise engaged).
Reports suggest that the couple want to gain the royal seal of approval ahead of Pippa Middleton’s wedding to James Matthews this summer, while the odds of a royal wedding taking place next year currently set at 1-4 by Ladbrokes.
Harry’s sister-in-law Kate Middleton had to wait much longer before coming face to face with the Queen: she did not meet the monarch until May 2008, at the wedding of William’s cousin Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly, five whole years after the now-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge started dating.
Should Harry wish to propose to Meghan, royal protocol dictates that he will have to seek permission from his grandmother first: as fifth in line to the throne, Harry must abide by the Royal Marriages Act, which requires the Queen’s closest descendants to gain the monarch’s approval before marrying.
