Yesterday, both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton attended the Remembrance Sunday memorial service at the Cenotaph in London. But those watching the service might have noticed that the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex were standing on separate balconies at the Foreign Office.
While Kate stood with Queen Elizabeth and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Meghan took to a balcony with Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Princess Anne's husband.
Some unfortunately might have assumed it’s proof of a reported rift between the families, but the reason they were seperated is actually very straightforward. As Hello reports, at events like this, royals stand according to their order of precedence. (And unlike events at Buckingham Palace, the balconies at the Foreign Office are too small for them all to stand together.)
So, The Queen was accompanied by Prince Charles' wife Camilla and Kate, who has taken Philip’s place since he has given up royal duties. And Meghan - who last year stood next to Elke Büdenbender, the wife of Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier - was joined by the Countess of Wessex and Sir Timothy Laurence on one balcony.
Other royals who attended the event included Prince Charles - who laid a wreath - Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne. 2019's ceremony marked 75 years since the 1944 battles of Monte Cassino, Kohima, Impal and D-Day, as well as the centenary of GCHQ.
Saturday's service at the Royal Albert Hall marked the first joint public appearance for brothers Harry and William, along with their wives, since the release of emotional documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, where Harry admitted that he and his brother are now on ‘different paths’ and that they have ‘good days’ and ‘bad days’.
