Meghan Markle has given her first TV interview since stepping down from senior royal duties. The Duchess’ first big job post-Megxit was narrating a documentary about elephants for Disney - and now she’s spoken about the experience with Good Morning America. ‘I’m really grateful to be a part of bringing this story about elephants to life,’ she says, in a segment which was recorded last year.

Elephant, which was released on Disney Plus earlier this month, follows one African elephant named Shani and her son Jomo as they head off across the Kalahari Desert with their herd. And, kindly, all profits from the film are being donated to charity Elephants Without Borders, an organisation which both Harry and Meghan have supported in the past.

‘I’ve been very lucky to be able to have hands on experience with elephants in their natural habitat, when you spend time connecting with them and the other wildlife you really understand we have a role to play in their preservation and their safety,’ she continued.

Meghan also spoke about her love of elephants in the pre-recorded interview. ‘These creatures are so majestic, but at the same time they are so sensitive and so connected,’ Meghan says. ‘We see in this film just how remarkable they are. Their memories are amazing. The close nature of the herd, the protectiveness of their young. They’re a lot more like us than they are different.’

She added, ‘I hope when people see this film, they realise how connected we all are, and if we had more of an awareness about the obstacles we’re facing I think we’d take care of each other, this planet and animals in a very different way.’

It was believed Meghan became involved in the project following The Lion King premiere last July, where Harry told Disney CEO Bob Iger that his wife was 'really interested' in doing voiceovers.

Meghan and Harry officially stepped down from their senior royal duties on March 31. Yesterday, the couple wrote a letter to the UK's biggest tabloids, saying they will ‘no longer offer themselves up as currency for an economy of clickbait and distortion’.
