The Duchess of Sussex has returned to Canada amid ongoing discussions over the future role for her and the Duke of Sussex in the Royal Family. Meghan and Harry had been in Canada to celebrate Christmas with Archie, and a spokeswoman for the Duchess of Sussex confirmed Meghan returned to North America yesterday. The Daily Mailreport that her eight-month-old son, who was reportedly left with their nanny and Meghan's best friend Jess Mulroney. (Jess shared a post on Instagram yesterday which read, 'A strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink.')
In their announcement on Wednesday evening, Prince Harry and Meghan revealed they intend ‘to step back as senior members of the Royal Family, and work to become financially independent’ so they could split their time between the UK and North America. Buckingham Palace responded with the statement, 'Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.' It was reported that the royals were ‘hurt’ by the statement, with the BBC saying they were ‘blindsided’.
As part of their move, Meghan and Harry will no longer be taking an allowance from the Queen (only 5% of their income was actually from the Queen). The rest of it comes from the Duchy (AKA Prince Charles). And it seems that at least initially they'll be keeping that income. The Sussex Royal website says: 'Since the establishment of The Office of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, 95 percent of the funding received for their Office expenditure is derived from income allocated by HRH The Prince of Wales, generated through the Duchy of Cornwall.'
