Meghan Markle was among the front runners to play a Bond girl in the forthcoming 25th instalment of the iconic film franchise - before her relationship with Prince Harry took her out of the running - a new report in The Sun suggests.

According to the newspaper, Bond producers had placed Meghan on a shortlist of five ‘rising stars’ who might be suitable to appear alongside Daniel Craig in what would later be. named No Time To Die. However, when news broke of her relationship with Prince Harry in the latter half of 2016, they were forced to rethink, and removed the Suits star from contention.

A source involved in the production claimed: ‘Meghan fits the role of a Bond girl perfectly. She’s glamorous and sexy and a good actress.’

‘The role more recently has gone to actresses deemed to be rising stars, and Meghan certainly was seen as that before her relationship with Harry became public. The brief was to find a glamorous rising star, specifically someone American or Canadian,’ they added.

‘Producers had narrowed down her and four other actresses on a shortlist last year [in 2016] with Bond 25 in mind. But the minute her relationship to Harry came to light they assumed she was out of the running so it soon became a list of four,’ the source said. We now know, of course, that Lashana Lynch and Ana de Armas took the roles that were, at least in the early stages, up for grabs.

‘Her engagement effectively spelt an end to her acting career too so that was the final blow,’ the source concluded.

In the first interview with her fiancé following the official announcement of their engagement, Meghan revealed that she was ready to move away from acting after wrapping up her role on Suits.

‘I see it as a new change, a new chapter,’ she said. ‘I’ve been working on my show seven years, we were so fortunate to have that longevity and I feel like I checked that box and am very proud of the work I’ve done there.'

Meghan, who has previously served as a UN women's advocate, has since focused on philanthropy, but has not left acting for good: she recently recorded a voiceover for a Disney documentary.

No Time To Die will be in cinemas soon, having been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. Perhaps, now that she's no longer a senior royal, Meghan could appear in Bond 26? With No Time To Die likely to be Daniel Craig's final outing, maybe the Duchess could be Bond herself? Now that would make film history.
