One of the most contentious issues surrounding The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s retirement from their senior royal roles was money. When they first announced their departure, some wondered if they would still accept public funds, or if they would make their own money. If the latter, how? Now, the couple may have added a lucrative revenue stream to their lives by signing with a renowned public speaking agency.
According to a source, Harry and Meghan have just signed up with Harry Walker Agency – a New York-based company described as the ‘world’s leading speakers’ bureau’ – which will represent them for any speaking engagement work. The individual, who claimed to be close to the pair, states that they will speak on issues close to their hearts, including gender equality, mental health and the environment.
They are undoubtedly in good company. Harry Walker also represents Barack and Michelle Obama, Hillary and Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and primatologist Jane Goodall, all friends of the couple.
According to PR expert Mark Borkowski, this move could earn them up to £1 million a speech.
‘I’m surprised they haven’t done this sooner,’ he told The Sun. ‘It will be one of the great income generators for them. They will clean up — they are up there with the Obamas. The speaker’s circuit is a natural safe space for them to plunder. And they are doing it in America, which is where the money is.’
The pair have been cutting their teeth with a handful of private appearances – Harry spoke at a JP Morgan event – as well as video calls with their charities and foundations. They are currently seeking a permanent base in California, while they stay at the Hollywood home of director Tyler Perry.
Earlier this week, they showed their support for Homeboy Industries, which works with those who have previously been in prison, helping to prepare food for the vulnerable. 'The Duke and Duchess connect deeply to Homeboy’s mission to welcome all people into a community of mutual kinship and love, focused on healing and contributing to the wellbeing of families and communities,' said a source. 'To them, Homeboy is a perfect example of how empathy, kindness, and compassion can change the world.'
