2020 has been, um, weird. The last few months have seen the world shut down, routines fly out the window, and some people (purportedly) take the opportunity to try out wholesome hobbies. Personally, I’ve been very proud of myself for achievements like Sitting Upright and Putting My Socks On; nevertheless, I hear that sourdough – laborious, expensive, alchemical – was all the rage to begin with. Then it was that foamy coffee thing, and everyone got into DIY (suddenly imperative, when you’re not allowed to leave the house). One must pass the time, after all; apparently Madonna’s been working on a screenplay, so. Oh yeah: and Meghan Markle and Adele are now doing pilates together.
Striking up new friendships is hard at the best of times, but it sounds like Meghan and Adele hit it off in earnest when the Sussexes moved to LA back in March. Since then, the new pals have stayed close (though, I am sure, not closer than two metres) – and now they’re taking fitness classes together. A source told the Mirror that Prince Harry has been joining the fun, describing the sessions as “a great stress buster”.
Lord knows that’s called for. Besides Meghan’s ongoing lawsuit against the Mail on Sunday after they published portions of letter she sent to her dad, andleaving the royal family, and juggling a baby with an intercontinental move, that pesky pandemic has left very few lives indeed untouched. Lockdowns apply to everyone, viruses don’t care if you’re rich or poor, and the background fuzz of trauma has seeped into every aspect of our daily existences – royals (even soon-to-be-former-ones) are no exception.
Meghan seems to be holding tight to new friends, new homes, and new routines amidst choppy waters. Meanwhile, Adele is apparently leaning well into her role as Neighbour Of The Year – it’s believed she’s pointed Harry and Meghan in the right direction for everything from schools for Archie to discreet places for some quiet family time out of the house. While you might feel uninclined to add Getting Very Fit and Self Improvement to your Corona to-do list, there’s no doubt that staying active and reaching out are enormously heartening. And lift! And hold! And 2, 3, 4!
