Maya is the oldest child of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. Her parents met on the set of Gattaca and married in May 1998. They were married for seven years before divorcing in 2005 when Maya was five. “I’m not interested in hiding from the fact that my parents are actors. I’m proud of them!” Maya told British Vogue in an interview.
She has one brother and two half siblings from her father’s second marriage to Ryan Shawhughes. Creativity runs in the family and she is the great-great-grand niece of playwright Tennessee Williams.

While studying acting at Juilliard School in New York Maya was offered the part of Jo March in the BBC miniseries adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Unsurprisingly she didn't turn down the opportunity for her on-screen debut. Kathryn Newton, Willa Fitzgerald and Annes Elwy played Maya’s on screen sisters Amy, Meg and Beth.
The young actor had previously been lined up to play the lead role in Universal Pictures's live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid but while Sofia Coppola pushed for Maya to play the part, the producers chose the better-known Chloë Grace Moretz.

Maya has starred in advertising campaigns for both Calvin Klein and All Saints alongside appearing in editorials for Vogue.
