The whole fun of that summer post-school and pre-uni in the UK is that it lasts forever. For some, it literally does last forever because uni is so bewilderingly and offputtingly expensive, and for others, even those who didn’t do a gap year, exams finish in about May, and then, even after you get your results, should they be good enough, you have another six weeks or so before uni starts.
But shed a tear or two for American students, who are in the midst of their freshers’ week right now. And among those enjoying the revelry will be Malia Obama, who has arrived at Harvard.
Given a send-off by her parents, Barack and Michelle, Malia got to her red-brick dorm a day early, reports the Daily Mail, around the same time as the lunar eclipse. Perhaps this was an attempt to deflect a bit of attention from Malia as she goes about her life as a relatively normal high-achieving go-getting daughter of the coolest President ever?
While she hasn’t given interviews to the press - Malia is a politician’s daughter, not a politician in her own right (take note, meddling kids of Trump) - her dad has previously shared his college advice for her with the world: ‘Be open to new experiences when you go to college. Don’t go to college just to duplicate the same experience you had in high school.’
We’re sure he gave her a few more details than that, but the whole notion of exploring and pushing at the edges of what life has previously told you to expect? That’s a pretty good one. Now, maybe it’s time for the paparazzi to clear off; we’d never have lived it down if there’d been cameras at our freshers week!
