Love Island fans have accused Michael of gaslighting, after he lied to Amber in last night’s episode, following his recoupling with Joanna. It comes after the 27-year-old told Molly-Mae that he'd slept outside - not in a bed with Joanna - in Casa Amor. (That's despite the fact the firefighter wanted to sleep beside her straight away - and he only waited until the second night because Curtis and Tommy advised him to.)
The episode has prompted 196 Ofcom complaints. A spokesman for the regulator told Grazia Daily, 'We will assess these complaints against our broadcasting rules, but are yet to decide whether or not to investigate.'
One viewer tweeted, ‘michael is genuinely SO manipulative. amber is having a mature conversation and he’s making out that she’s crazy????? gaslighting at its finest #loveisland’ Another said, ‘If you want to know the signs of gaslighting, just observe everything Michael has done over the past few days. He’s a manipulator, a liar and reeks of toxicity. Amber had a lucky escape. He’s trying to rile her up so she’ll prove all the things he has said about her. #loveisland'
'Gaslighting' is manipulating someone into thinking they’re in the wrong - which Joe Garratt was accused of doing earlier in the series to Lucie Donlan. It’s something that Adam Collard was also slammed for doing last series to Rosie Williams.
