When you think of the overlap of One Direction fans and 'Doncaster Rovers fans’, you're probably not going to come up with many people. That’s presumably why Louis Tomlinson from One Direction’s efforts to get people to help him crowdfund his ownership of Doncaster Rovers didn’t do so well.

Him and co-owner, former chairman John Ryan, put £500,000 into the fund and then offered fans to invest in the club by donating money via a crowdfunding site (in return for signed photos of Louis for up to £250!) so they could buy it outright, according to The Tomlinson Ryan Trust's website.

Fans donated a further £757,000. However, it wasn’t enough – Louis and John had hoped to reach £2m, and so now, according to a joint statement between the pair ‘the deal to take over the club is now in serious doubt', reports The Guardian.

With Louis feeling a little forlorn by the experience – Doncaster Rovers have been his team since childhood, and he played for their reserves in a charity match once – he tweeted:

Then he added that the crowdfunding element was never his own idea:

Luckily for Louis, he’s got his Directioners to cheer him up, and they’ve christened today #LouisAppreciationDay. Making happy memes and virals about the pop star, they’ve made Twitter awash with cutesie sentiment towards him.

Oh dear, if only tweets were money. At the very least, maybe Louis’ endeavour has got some more girls into sport?
