If anything could pull us out of our Trump-induced blues and distract us, momentarily, from the seriousness of the absurd power play the new President is exerting, Louis Theroux can.
And indeed, amidst Trump’s grievous acts as President – which includes setting back LGBT and women’s rights, and imposing a Muslim ban (like you need reminding) – our favourite documentary-maker has been working on a film about the President’s rise to power.
Last year, Louis expressed his interest in Trump's supporters in the lead up the election. Speaking to Australian ABC News back in September, Louis – who is both a British and American citizen – was asked if he saw it conceivable that Trump could win the US election in November.
‘I think he could win, absolutely,’ he replied. ‘I think that he could win because there’s Trump supporters out there who aren’t even revealing themselves as such, and for me that’s an interesting prospect because I think he’d be a disastrous President.’
Louis, with all of his awkward charm that makes him so loveable, certainly felt attracted to the Trump supporters who he perceives to ‘see Trump, for all his flaws, as a breath of fresh air,’ and is likely to engage in some Louis-style confrontation - aka polite and bashful bewilderment, if his previous documentaries are anything to go by.
Speaking to The Mirror about the difficulties he’ll face tackling Trump in a documentary, he said:
‘The challenge with Trump would be...something so abhorrent that walks on two legs and is a human being, you have to explore where his foibles come from.
‘It feels like a whole cultural, almost sea change in how the world is part of the post-Brexit wave of populism. The story seems to change every day with Trump. There's something new bubbling under. It's hard to get your head around such a big subject.
'Hopefully people will like it. It's good.'
We’re sure we will, Louis.
The documentary doesn’t have a public release date yet, but will be part of a new, currently untitled, three-part series on BBC 2. Get ready!
