Louis Theroux’s famously uncomfortable squint will soon be back on our screens. Unfortunately,it won’t be directed at Trump after all. But it’s still back all the same.
The documentary geek will be returning for a three-part American focused series, but says he will be focusing on social issues within the country rather than on the politicians. ‘I immerse myself in some of the most dysfunctional and disturbing aspects of American society,’ he said in an interview with the Telegraph. ‘I have been granted access to the police in several states; I’ve got to know the people affected by crime; and I’ve also spent time with the perpetrators of crime, with the idea of understanding the causes of it, both on a systemic level and also in a very personal way.’
In true Theroux fashion he’s chosen hard-hitting themes, exploring the relationship between African-American citizens and the police in Murder in Milwaukee, following two police shootings. In S_ex Trafficking in Houston_ (which is a working title), Louis will go to the largest hub of human trafficking and meet the pimps, the prostitutes and the police who struggle with helping women out of crime whilst also criminalising them. And in Opiate City, Louis travels to Huntington, West Virginia, where heroin use is 13 times higher than the national average, and one in 10 babies are born opiate addicts.
Whilst these all sound great, we have to say we’re still slightly pining for a Trump-Theorux meeting, purely for the facial expressions and come backs. Although round of applause for Louis’ not giving Trump the extra air time to share his very, erm, opinionated opinions.
There hasn’t been an official date announced for when these documentaries will air, but keep your eyes firmly locked on BBC 2’s schedule to make sure you don’t miss the latest installment of Theroux’s alternative charm.
