Lorde might not strike any of us as too similar to Kanye West – she spends much of her breakout song, Royals, mocking exactly the sort of excesses he brags about in his songs. However, she tips her hat to the rapper/producer/ego, saying that she’d love to reach his levels of hubris, arrogance, swagger – whatever you want to call it.
‘I like making grand statements. The name Lorde is quite grand and a little bit arrogant. I like the intensity of it.’
‘I’m a really big fan of Kanye West’ she told NRJ: ‘He’s confident and I like that. I’m not that confident in myself yet.’ Well, she is only 17, and Kanye’s a 36-year-old who’s been making Grammy award-winning music since before Lorde was born. And he’s Kanye West. No one can compete with that ego, not even Simon Cowell.
If any of this news comes as a shock to you, then you should probably take a moment to remember that Lorde’s set a precedent for liking him. Not only does she cover his song Hold My Liquor in her live sets, but she’s said he’s a fan. In an interview with Rolling Stone she said that she’d met the Yeezus performer on Jools Holland, revealing: 'He said he liked the messages [in my songs], which was cool. I was saying to myself, “Keep cool. This is normal.”’
Kanye’s not the only rapper she’s cool with – she made up with one of his protégés Tyler, The Creator at Coachella. The Odd Future member had previously posted a photo of Lorde and her boyfriend James Lowe on Instagram, putting a big ‘hahahahahahahaha’ (not verbatim, but it was loads like that) caption underneath, which resulted in the picture going viral and loads of people weighing on James’s appearance (some were pretty racist about him, too). However, Lorde and Tyler caught up at Coachella and now they’re okay.
