It seems like two women can’t become BFFs without a slack-jawed bloke around to rub his thighs in anticipation that they’re lezzing off with each other. But Lorde, aged 17, knew just how to respond when faced with this rumour about her friendship with Taylor Swiftby a 42-year-old Australian radio DJ.
Kyle Sandilands, who is ‘the king of the kids’ Down Under, said to Lorde: ‘Are you guys together now? Not together as in lesbians. I’m not talking about “Ellen together” I’m talking about, like, you guys are friendly right?’ To which she responded: ‘What do you mean you’re not talking about “Ellen together*," is there something wrong with lesbians?’
Hardly taking the hint, Kyle, who works for KIIS FM, continued on this tack, saying: ‘Oh my god, no, I would love that! Are you going to confirm now you’re in a lesbian relationship with her?’ – FYI reader, remember Kyle is 42 and Lorde is 17. Which is why her response is even better. ‘Don’t even try it,’ she said.
Kyle did, though, continuing: ‘I do love her, though, we get along well with her. She’s very down to earth, right?’
The singer – real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor – was pretty fed up by this point, and was every bit indignant woman as she was surly teen with her final response: ‘Uh… yeah.’
There’s also no love lost between her and Katy Perry though, as she explained why she didn’t take the Dark Horse singer up on a supporting slot on her tour: ‘I think in the really early stages of any artist’s career it’s important for them to establish themselves for themselves,’ she said. ‘I’m just basically really stubborn and I want to be really independent and so I wanted to be headlining my own shows as opposed to supporting someone else.’
So, as much as Kyle might froth at the idea of Lorde and Taylor doing a taTu-style collaboration tour, it’s never ever ever going to happen.
*We sort of love/hate that 'Ellen' has become slang for all lesbians... surely it just means women who look impeccable in Saint Laurent tuxes?
