Though heralded as a refreshing pop star, a young woman who sings about the dullness of youth rather than partying and fun fun fun all the time, Lorde insists that she is not the anti-Miley.
‘I get really frustrated about people putting me as the anti-Miley. I think that's one of the things journalists concoct in their offices.’ She told Q, as we sat in our offices and brewed some more names for her e.g. ‘Kiwi Kween of pop’ (sorry, it’s been a long day.)
‘People love to pit female artists against each other in pop, which just seems like the silliest thing ever. It's not some kind of fight to the death.’
Which is totally true, unless you consider Mariah Carey’s Heartbreaker video or Madonna’s Die Another Day, where each pop star splits into two versions of themselves (one brunette, one blonde) and then battles it out between themselves. But those are totally internalised fights there just for the lols of the video, right? Not exactly getting each singer to slag off whoever else is vying for number one spot that week.
Lorde finished up: ‘People kind of think I don't wear bras and underwear in my videos because I think there's something wrong with it - I don't. I just don't feel super comfortable with that and I don't think that it would help my music to come across any different.’
We totally agree, and we like to think there’s enough room in our hearts, enough capacity to love, for us to behold both Miley Cyrus and Lorde in our high esteem if we feel like it. We draw the line at any We Can't Stop/Royals mash-ups, though.
