Well this certainly doesn’t happen every day. Lorde’s parents have gotten engaged, after being together for almost 30 years.

The New Zealand native was in Canada to perform at the Much Music Awards at the weekend with her family, and they all headed to Niagara Falls – which happens to be a popular proposal spot – afterwards. Lo and behold, her father, Vic, popped the question to her mum, Sonja.

Lorde – whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor – Tweeted: ‘BEST DAY – went to niagara falls – my dad proposed to my mum after almost 30 years together.' She then added: ‘Inevitable response yes i know i have seen a diamond now.'

It seems like Lorde really wants her parents married, which is quite traditional, really! 'Lorde' and 'traditional' –not two words you'd normally use in the same sentence, are they?

She won International Video of the Year for her song Royals at the awards, which took place on Sunday in Toronto.
