If anyone has completely owned 2019, it was Lizzo so desperately needed in an era of photoshopping and Instagram.

Unfortunately, not everyone loves Lizzo as much as us (and Harry Styles{ =nofollow}, who covered Juice in Radio 1’s Live Lounge last week) and she is often on the receiving end of nasty abuse online. Yesterday, a tweet started circulating, largely because it was so ridiculous, claiming that Lizzo is only popular because America is experiencing an obesity epidemic. Sorry, what?

‘#Lizzo popular is because there is an obesity epidemic in America,’ Dr Boyce Watkins wrote. ‘Rather than encouraging people to do better, we are simply lying to them and telling them that they are just fine the way they are.’ He then, for effect, decided to add: ‘Unfortunately, many of these people are dying from diabetes and heart disease.’

Honestly, it's hard to remember the last we saw such a far-fetched argument, but Lizzo helpfully replied for us, explaining why the tweet was a load of bollocks. ‘I’m popular because I write good songs and I’m talented and perform high energy hour and a half shows filled with love,’ she responded on Twitter. ‘The only person who needs to do better is you. Keep my name out ya mouth & look in the mirror before you come for me. Here’s the attention you ordered.’ Since, her tweet has been liked over quarter of a million fans, who are agreeing that - actually - we all just love Lizzo because she is so bloody talented. And that she is no way responsible for other people's health problems.

Other fans also pointed out that the same accusations are rarely made at famous and overweight men, who funnily enough aren’t held to account by the same patriarchal beauty standards. (As one Twitter user put it, ‘Fascinating how I never see tweets like these about DJ Khaled.’) Hmm. Quite. We’re off to listen to Lizzo while we wrap our Christmas presents.
