Uh oh. The Lizzie McGuire reboot has been cancelled. The sad news was confirmed by Hilary Duff in a statement on Wednesday, with Hilary saying the revamped series wouldn't be going ahead 'despite everyone's best efforts'. Taking to Instagram, the actress wrote: ‘I’ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life. She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself. To see the fans’ loyalty and love for her, to this day, means so much to me.'
Hilary continued: ‘I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with with her. I'm very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align. Hey now, this is what 2020s made of.'
It's especially bad news as production had actually already begun on the show, with several episodes reportedly being finished.
But, as previous reports said, and as Hilary hinted in her statement, Disney wasn't happy with the mature content that series creator and showrunner Terri Minsky and Hilary wanted to cover. Terri - who left the project after the first episodes were finished - hoped that the show could instead go ahead on streaming service Hulu, but that doesn't seem to have been successful. ‘Hilary has a grasp of Lizzie McGuire at 30 that needs to be seen,' Terri told Variety at the time. 'It’s a wonderful thing to watch. I would love the show to exist, but ideally I would love it if it could be given that treatment of going to Hulu and doing the show that we were doing.'
The cast was also thought to include most of the original actors. In November of 2019, she posted an Instagram picture of herself posing with actor Adam Lamberg, who played her friend (and eventual love interest). And her parents and brother, Jake - Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine and Jake Thomas - were all photographed at a table read last year.
