Gemma Atkinson, Lisa-from-Hollyoaks or, if you're a current Emmerdale watcher (in which case more power to you, sister), Carly Hope, has long been a lady whose looks people have liked to offer their unsolicited opinions on. Now, though, the actress has had e-bloody-nough and delivered a blistering comeback to a commenter who took umbridge with a picture of Gemma on The Daily Mail.
The picture in question was from the TV Choice Awards earlier this week. Gemma wore a (gasp) black and white dress, some black shoes, and an artfully undone bun in her hair. She looked lovely. The comments underneath the piece, though, were less than complimentary and included, (but certainly weren't limited to) this charming man who wrote: 'I wouldn't know whether to fight it or fluff it.' Because fuck him and the horse he rode in on.
But it was a female commenter that really got Gemma's goat: 'Jenny_cro' from Dublin chose to make her thoughts on Gemma's appearance known through the astonishingly witty technique of leaving a post that simple read 'man'.
Gemma then posted a picture of Jenny_cro's comment on Instagram alongside her riposte; in which she takes to task woman-on-woman bitching. 'This woman here commenting on MY appearance. A female YET AGAIN slagging off another female,' she said. Gemma is famously a big gym goer and it's this that she believes people don't like. 'You should be embarrassed. I'm not a man, I just look stronger then you because I train and you clearly don't and that makes you feel shitty because you're insecure sat at a computer slagging off someone to make yourself feel better. Maybe you wish you had the dedication to see what your body is capable of doing at the gym? Either way, Jealousy is a terrible disease.'
She then went on to highlight how negative body comments can affect people's opinions of themselves and lead to unhealthy behaviour, 'I just want to highlight the (now unfortunately) reoccurring issue of woman being negative to woman. It's like someone saying "fat" or "skinny" or "butch" or "manly" to describe someone else's body. They are all offensive in their own way and it's the reason people are scared to train, the reason people binge eat and then throw up, or the reason people overeat or don't eat at all or the reason people self harm. If you ain't happy with yourself, work on you! Don't bash others to make yourself feel better for a while!'
