Lily Allen launched her own vibrator earlier this year - and now she's discussed masturbation and female pleasure on a podcast with Love Island's Megan Barton Hanson. During the candid chat on Megan's You Come First podcast, the singer tells Megan that she didn't properly commit to self-pleasure until she was in her late 20s. And says, prior to that, her relationship with masturbation was 'non-committal'.
Lily also spoke about how she found sex performative when she was younger. 'Personally, partnered sex for me, especially when I was much younger, was performative,' the singer said. 'It was never about giving myself pleasure. It was always “do I look good enough” or “am I doing the right thing for his pleasure”. And I don’t know if that’s a cultural thing or, you know, we didn’t really talk about sex in our family.' She says, because of this, she followed what she saw on TV and in movies, adding: 'You’re meant to lie there and make funny noises.'
The musician - who has two daughters, Marnie, seven, and Ethel, nine - hopes to be more open with her own family. 'My kids have not come to me so far and asked me any questions as they’re seven and nine,' she said. ‘I guess they’ll just come to me, and if they don’t come to me by the ages of 13/14, I’ll have the conversation with them.’
Her 2009 hit Not Fair is famously about a man being bad in bed, which she also spoke about on the podcast. When asked if she hesitated before writing the lyrics, Lily replied: 'No, not really - at that stage in my career, there wasn’t really trolling to the extent that there is now.' She added: 'I just thought, at the time, people would have thought it was funny.'
